Presentation:
Charles A. “Charlie” Donelan was a long-time resident of Dedham who distinguished himself in broadcasting and print journalism. In radio’s formative years, Charlie hosted one of the first sports shows in Boston, interviewing players and talking about the games. He was also one of the first play-by-play announcers in Boston, broadcasting the Boston Braves home games as well as some college football. But Charlie was best known as a sports cartoonist and a sportswriter—first in Providence and then in Boston. In addition, he was a talented comedian and a popular public speaker.

Media historian and former broadcaster Donna Halper, a professor of media studies at Lesley University, will introduce you to the amazing life and media exploits of Charlie Donelan as we travel back to the 1920s, a time when broadcasting was new and sports fans were delighted to hear the games on the air and then read about them in the newspaper.
